Below includes a step by step procedure on how to make a dish really popular in North India called Dal Fry.
Ingredients Required
- 1 Cup of Pigeon Peas Dal
- 1 Cup of Gram Peas Dal
- 1 Small cup of Ghee
- Cumin Seeds
- 1 Cinnamon Stick (Daalcheene)
- 2-3 Cloves (Laung)
- 1 Bowl of Onions finely chopped
- 1 Bowl of Tomatoes
- 2 Green Chillies
- Asafoetida (Heeng)
- Garlic
- Coriander Leaves (Dhaniya)
- Seasoning Ingredients
- Water
Procedure
- Mix the Pigeon Peas Dal and Gram Peas Dal together in little amount of water and pressure cook it for about 3-4 whistles.
- Lightly churn the Dal mixture till it looks like this.
- Add 3/4 of the ghee in a pan and let it heat. Add Cumin seeds, Cinnamon and Cloves to it.
- Add Onions and cook until they turn Golden. Now add Green Chillies and Tomatoes to the mixture.
- Cook until the Tomatoes become soft.(You can add salt to the mixture to speed up the cooking of tomatoes)
- Add about 2 table spoons of Turmeric Powder and 1 table spoon of Kashmiri red chilli powder and mix well.
- Now add the earlier cooked Dal mixture to the above mixture slowly and mix well.
- Add some water to the Dal as it tends to thicken a little.
- Mix the Dal well and cook it on medium flame till it begins to boil.
For The Tadka
- In a small bowl heat the remaining ghee and cook it along with some Heeng, Garlic and a red chilli.
- Add on top of the Dal for the tadka.
- Garnish it with some Coriander leaves at the top.
